On November 24, 1859, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection’ by Charles Darwin was published.
This book caused us change how we view ourselves. In it, as you may know, Darwin posits that natural selection is the engine that drives the evolution of the human species. His argument that was so persuasive even 19th century religious leaders adjusted their lessons to allow room for his theory to work in concert with divine design. On the Origin of the Species has only grown in recognition in the more than 160 years since publication and it is widely concluded to be the most important biological book ever written. The first printing consisted of only 1,250 copies, and the number of extant copies are now significantly fewer.
